UK drivers are facing a pothole crisis, with claims for damage soaring by 90% in just three years, according to data from the RAC Media Centre. The sharp rise to 1.4 million claims in 2022 – up from 732,000 in 2019 – has put immense pressure on councils to allocate more funds to repair and maintain roads.
Motorists are now facing increased costs and disruption due to pothole damage, not only risking vehicle damage but also shouldering higher repair bills and daily life disruptions. The issue of potholes has long plagued motorists, who are increasingly calling for improved road maintenance.
The Labour Party is demanding more government support, with Shadow Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh stating: 'This is a damning indictment of the Conservative government's failure to invest in our roads.'
Despite pledging £1.5 billion for road maintenance over five years, the government faces mounting criticism that its efforts are insufficient in addressing the growing pothole problem.
