The number of pothole-related vehicle breakdowns in the UK has increased by 50% in the past year, according to the RAC. The organisation, which provides roadside assistance, has warned that poor road conditions are a major concern for drivers. The RAC's data shows that potholes are a leading cause of vehicle damage, with many drivers experiencing costly repairs as a result.
The RAC's figures come as the organisation launches its annual 'Pothole Patrol' campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the issue and encourage drivers to report damaged roads. The campaign will see RAC patrols visiting roads across the UK to inspect for potholes and other hazards.
The RAC's head of roads policy, Nicholas Lyes, said: 'The state of our roads is a major concern for drivers, and potholes are a leading cause of vehicle damage. We urge drivers to be cautious on the roads and to report any damaged roads to their local authorities.'
The RAC's data also shows that the north of England is the worst region for pothole-related breakdowns, with 25% of all incidents occurring in the area. The organisation is calling on the government to invest more money in road maintenance to address the issue.
