Construction plans for the £430m Greenlink interconnector, an undersea power cable designed to link the National Grid to Ireland, were altered following objections concerning a memorial to a fictional character. The original route for the 200km cable was set to pass through Freshwater West, a beach on the Pembrokeshire coast that served as a filming location for the seventh and eighth Harry Potter films.
A memorial to Dobby the elf, a character from the Harry Potter series, consisting of a pile of rocks, is located on the beach. Project manager Simon Ludlam informed the Energy Revolution podcast last week that the project received "hundreds" of calls protesting the initial plans. Despite initial disbelief, the project was subsequently re-mapped to avoid the memorial.
Construction of the Greenlink interconnector began in 2022 and became operational last year.
