Premier League clubs eye last-minute deals as transfer window nears close

With just one week left in the summer transfer window, Premier League clubs are actively seeking to strengthen their squads, with several high-profile targets and potential departures identified.

  • The summer transfer window for Premier League clubs closes on Tuesday, 1 September at 23:00 BST.
  • Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing forward Julian Alvarez, despite the deal appearing difficult.
  • Aston Villa are seeking a striker, with Nicolas Jackson a target, following Ollie Watkins' transfer saga with Al-Hilal.

Premier League clubs have just one week remaining to finalise their squads before the summer transfer window closes on Tuesday, 1 September at 23:00 BST. The opening weekend of the season has highlighted areas where teams need to strengthen.

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have already bolstered their midfield, wing, and defence. However, they are still in the market for a forward and maintain a long-standing interest in Julian Alvarez, though securing the deal appears challenging.

Aston Villa are actively searching for a striker, with Nicolas Jackson identified as a target, amidst reports of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal attempting to sign Ollie Watkins. Villa also require a winger and a defender, having opened talks for Club Brugge's Joel Ordonez after bids for Taylor Harwood-Bellis were rejected.

Bournemouth are reportedly close to signing Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, while Brentford are not expected to have a busy end to the window after significant squad strengthening. Brighton anticipates the departures of Yankuba Minteh to Liverpool and Carlos Baleba to Manchester United, which may lead them to seek midfield and forward reinforcements.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes his squad is largely complete, with the priority being to reduce the current 39-player squad to around 25. Coventry City are pursuing Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who is returning after a suspension, and also need defensive cover. Crystal Palace requires a senior centre-back and potentially another defender following Chadi Riad's injury.

Why this matters: The final week of the transfer window is a critical period for clubs to address squad needs, which could significantly impact their performance in the upcoming season.
