Former champions Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are set to clash in an all-Welsh World Grand Prix quarter-final in Leicester on Friday. Price secured his spot by beating England's Ross Smith in straight sets, avenging an earlier defeat in the World Series final.
Price, who has yet to drop a set in this year's tournament, commented, "It wasn't a brilliant game, but a win's a win and I'm still in the tournament." Clayton advanced after a 3-1 victory over Dutchman Wessel Nijman, averaging 93 and landing eight 180s. Clayton stated, "It felt good up there."
The Welsh duo share a friendly rivalry, with Clayton noting, "There's banter between me and Gezzy (Price)." Price recalled a past encounter, saying, "I remember years ago, Jonny in the final of this tournament absolutely smashed me."
Other quarter-finalists confirmed for Friday include Nathan Aspinall and Ryan Joyce, who both achieved straight-set wins against Luke Woodhouse and Danny Noppert respectively. The remaining four second-round matches are scheduled for Thursday evening.
