British tennis player Sonay Kartal has made a winning return to the WTA Tour, securing a straight-sets victory over Spain's Andrea Lazaro Garcia at the China Open. Kartal won 6-2 6-3 in the round of 128, marking her first tour appearance since a back injury sustained in March.

Kartal's six-month absence was due to a back injury from Indian Wells. She had previously returned to tennis in the Billie Jean King Cup last week.

In other British tennis news, Katie Boulter also advanced at the China Open, beating Mai Hontama 6-3 6-4. However, Arthur Fery was defeated in the first round of the Japan Open by Portugal's Jaime Faria, losing 4-6 6-3 4-6.
