Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to announce plans to increase public control of the water, energy, and transport industries tomorrow. In his first speech to Labour's conference as Prime Minister, Mr Burnham is anticipated to state that Britain is currently "run for vested interests" and that politicians need to take "more control of the basics so that we can make [the country] more functional again."
A statement released ahead of his speech indicates he will announce a "raft of policies and commitments that will bring hope again to Britain." Mr Burnham has previously advocated for greater public control of the water and energy sectors, though he has not specified if this includes public ownership.
The government has faced economic challenges since July, with rising borrowing costs attributed to the war in Iran and concerns over the sustainability of Britain's finances. Mr Burnham is also expected to outline plans for social care and youth unemployment, having previously suggested additional taxes might be needed to fund these policies. Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake criticised the planned comments, stating that "hope is not a strategy."
