Prime Minister Andy Burnham's efforts to achieve cross-party agreement on social care reform, announced on 27 July, have been welcomed by a disability advocate. The advocate, who receives lifelong social care support, stated that Burnham's intervention indicates that people with disabilities are a priority.
The advocate emphasised that any reform of the social care system should involve disability groups and individuals with lived experience of disability. They highlighted that the current system often leads to dependency on temporary accommodation, rather than enabling support in people's own homes.
The prime minister's past experience as Mayor of Greater Manchester, where rough sleeping was reduced by two-thirds in his first five years, was also noted as a helpful background for addressing this issue.
