The field for the 2026 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, scheduled for Sunday at Longchamp, is starting to solidify. Daryz is currently the favourite among 19 potential runners.
France-Galop previously announced in June that geldings will be permitted to compete in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe starting in 2027. This decision was made amid a perceived need to maintain the race's standing as Europe's premier event, following a period since 2021 where it has fallen behind rivals like the Japan Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic in official world rankings.
This year's race features several notable contenders. Daryz could become the first male horse since Alleged in 1978 to win a second Arc. Maltese Cross, trained by Lester Piggott’s son-in-law William Haggas, is a main rival in the betting. Andrew Balding will attempt to bring an Arc trophy to Park House Stables, 55 years after his father Ian trained Mill Reef to victory.
The draw for stall positions will take place on Thursday morning, with the results to be revealed during an opening ceremony on Thursday evening, broadcast live on France-Galop’s YouTube channel. The deadline for declaring jockeys and equipment has been extended to later on Thursday evening.
Japanese contenders Meisho Tabaru and Admire Terra will aim to end Japan’s 0-for-36 losing streak in the Arc, which dates back to 1969. Aidan O’Brien’s initial entry has been reduced to three possible runners: Diamond Necklace, Minnie Hauk, and Benvenuto Cellini.
The going for the race remains unusually quick for this time of year in Paris, though a small amount of rain is forecast. This ground condition is considered favourable for Maltese Cross but less so for Thundering On, whose participation is unconfirmed as connections hope for softer ground.
