Somerset rue missed chances after finishing second in County Championship

Somerset have secured their sixth second-place finish in the County Championship since 2010, with senior figures lamenting a lack of ruthlessness earlier in the season.

  • Somerset finished second in the 2026 County Championship, their sixth runner-up spot since 2010.
  • Captain Lewis Gregory and Director of Cricket Andy Hurry cited a lack of ruthlessness in earlier games as key to missing out on the title.
  • Defeats to Yorkshire and Glamorgan in May were highlighted as crucial moments where the trophy slipped away.

Somerset have once again finished as runners-up in the County Championship, marking their sixth second-place finish in the competition since 2010. The team was top of the table with two games remaining, but a defeat to Yorkshire on 18 September meant control passed to eventual winners Warwickshire.

Captain Lewis Gregory told BBC Radio Somerset that while the team was in a strong position two weeks prior, a lack of ruthlessness in earlier games was the defining factor. He stated, "There were two games we were in a really good spot - probably didn't show the ruthlessness that we needed, to put us in a position where we were the only team that could win."

Director of Cricket Andy Hurry echoed this sentiment, specifically pointing to back-to-back defeats against Yorkshire in Taunton and Glamorgan in Cardiff during May. Hurry told BBC 5 Live that converting such games into positive results will be a significant focus for the future, adding, "But we want to win trophies and we want to win them consistently and that's really really important to us."
