Britain faces days of relentless heavy rain with the Met Office warning of widespread travel chaos and flooding across multiple regions as saturated ground struggles to cope with continuous downpours.
The South West and Midlands will bear the brunt of the deluge, with forecasters predicting significant surface water flooding and major disruption to road and rail networks. Temperatures will remain mild at 8°C to 12°C, but winds reaching 20-30 mph in exposed areas will create treacherous driving conditions.
Western Scotland and Northern Ireland face considerable rainfall with localised flooding likely, particularly where rivers are prone to swelling. Temperatures will drop to 5°C-10°C in Scotland and 6°C-11°C in Northern Ireland, whilst coastal areas could see wind gusts hitting 35-40 mph.
Wales confronts some of the heaviest rainfall, especially across western and southern counties where mountainous terrain heightens flash flooding risks on rural roads. The Met Office has urged particular vigilance in these areas, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 11°C and strong winds of 25-35 mph expected.
The Met Office is advising the public to check local flood warnings before travelling, allow extra journey time and never attempt to drive through floodwater. Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare defence measures where possible and contact emergency services if problems arise.
Authorities continue monitoring conditions closely with updated warnings to be issued as the situation develops.
