The gruesome murder of Charlie Kirk, a prominent figure in American conservative youth activism, continues to unfold in a Utah courtroom. Prosecutors have presented a damning array of evidence against Tyler Robinson, 23, who is accused of shooting Kirk in the neck on September 10th last year while he was speaking at Utah Valley University.
Tyler Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder, a capital offence in Utah, and the prosecution's case hinges on DNA evidence found on a rifle and a text message confession. The court heard that Kirk, a 31-year-old father-of-two, died instantly from his injuries, sparking widespread public outcry and an extensive investigation.
Throughout the five-day hearing, Robinson's defence team has challenged the evidence and testimony presented by prosecutors. They have raised objections regarding hearsay, potential juror bias, and questioned the credibility of expert witnesses, as well as the methodology and interpretation of DNA and ballistics reports during prolonged cross-examinations.
Chief Deputy Utah County Attorney General Chad Grunander addressed the judge, stating that the evidence is "overwhelming" and "devastating". Prosecutors have depicted Robinson, a trainee electrician and college dropout, as using his grandfather's rifle to assassinate Kirk and then attempting to conceal his tracks.
A key piece of testimony came from Lance Twiggs, Robinson's former roommate and romantic partner. In an April video interview, Twiggs described how Robinson had discussed current affairs and politics with him, but never mentioned Charlie Kirk specifically. He also recounted how Robinson left home unusually early on the morning of the shooting, around 4:00 AM.
Surveillance footage presented in court appears to show Robinson accessing the rooftop of the Losee Center, where Kirk was reportedly shot from approximately 126 metres away. Further testimony from State Bureau of Investigation Agent David Hull detailed video evidence of Robinson on the rooftop, lying prone, and later dropping down with an object in his hand.
