Timothy Miller, 76, of Hedge End, Southampton, appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on Wednesday wearing a burqa to deny a charge of wearing the garment to conceal his identity during a protest.
Mr Miller was arrested on 12 September in relation to anti-migrant and anti-racism demonstrations in Portsmouth city centre. During the hearing, he lifted the veil of the burqa to confirm his identity when asked by District Judge Stephen Apted.
When asked for his plea, Mr Miller stated: "As I am in every police camera, I am not guilty." He also told the court he was unrepresented but was crowdfunding for legal representatives.
District Judge Apted adjourned the case for a trial at the same court on 16 February and released Mr Miller on unconditional bail. Mr Miller's defence representatives must produce a report confirming his case.
