A road sign featuring a black car with a red cross is being misunderstood by thousands of UK drivers, putting motorists at risk of accidents and police fines, the RAC has warned.
The motoring organisation says the sign clearly indicates a 'no overtaking' zone, yet significant numbers of drivers fail to recognise its meaning. This confusion leads to dangerous driving practices and potential breaches of traffic regulations.
The signs are positioned in hazardous areas where overtaking could prove fatal - including winding roads, blind bends and sections with poor visibility. They're designed to prevent head-on collisions by stopping drivers from attempting risky manoeuvres.
Drivers who misinterpret the sign face serious consequences. Police can issue fines and penalty points for overtaking in prohibited zones, whilst the safety risks are even more severe - putting both the driver and other road users in danger.
The RAC's intervention highlights a broader issue with road sign awareness across Britain's network. The organisation is urging all motorists to refresh their Highway Code knowledge and pay closer attention to signage, emphasising that proper understanding of road signs remains fundamental to keeping the UK's roads safe.
