London drivers face fines of up to £180 for breaching the capital's maze of charging zones, prompting the RAC to publish a comprehensive guide to help motorists navigate the complex regulations.
The motoring organisation's detailed overview addresses three key zones that catch out drivers daily. The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), expanded across all London boroughs in August 2023, charges non-compliant vehicles £12.50 per day. Petrol cars must typically meet Euro 4 standards or newer, whilst diesel vehicles need Euro 6 or newer certification.
The Congestion Charge hits drivers harder at £15 daily for entering central London. It operates 7am-6pm on weekdays and noon-6pm at weekends and bank holidays. Electric vehicles may qualify for exemptions, but Transport for London (TfL) guidelines change regularly.
The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) targets commercial vehicles across Greater London, with charges significantly higher than ULEZ depending on vehicle type. Lorries, buses and coaches face the steepest penalties for non-compliance.
Beyond the charging zones, the RAC guide tackles practical challenges including London's notoriously expensive and scarce parking. The organisation urges drivers to plan routes carefully, consider public transport alternatives, and verify charges before travelling using online tools and mobile apps.
"Whether you're a daily commuter or weekend visitor, understanding these regulations is essential to avoid hefty fines," the guide states. For many families and small businesses already struggling with costs, unexpected penalty charges can prove financially damaging.
