The RAC has recently drawn attention to a selection of key rules within the Highway Code, serving as a timely reminder for all road users. This initiative aims to reinforce understanding and adherence to the regulations that govern behaviour on UK roads, which are fundamental to maintaining safety and order.
The Highway Code is a comprehensive document that outlines the legal requirements and recommended best practices for drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, horse riders, and pedestrians. While some rules are advisory, many are backed by law, and failure to comply can lead to significant penalties, including fines, penalty points on a driving licence, or even disqualification.
Among the rules highlighted by the motoring organisation are those pertaining to speed limits, which are legally enforceable and vary depending on the type of road and vehicle. Adhering to these limits is crucial for reducing the severity of accidents and protecting all road users. The RAC also emphasised rules related to vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, aligning with the significant updates introduced to the Code in January 2022.
These 2022 revisions introduced a 'hierarchy of road users', placing those who are most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy. This means drivers of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm have a greater responsibility to reduce the danger they pose to others. Specific changes included new guidance on giving way to pedestrians waiting to cross at junctions, and clearer instructions on safe passing distances for cyclists and horse riders.
The Department for Transport, which oversees the Highway Code, regularly reviews its contents to ensure it remains relevant and effective in promoting road safety. The RAC's reminder serves to underscore the continuous need for all individuals using UK roads to be fully aware of their obligations and the latest guidance, especially as traffic patterns evolve and new forms of transport become more prevalent.
