The RAC has issued urgent safety guidance as heavy rainfall batters parts of the UK, warning drivers that just 30cm of flowing water can float a car and cause fatal accidents.
The motoring organisation's comprehensive advice comes as the Met Office continues issuing yellow weather warnings for rain across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with localised flooding disrupting travel nationwide.
Drivers must significantly reduce speed and increase following distances to allow for greater braking time, the RAC states. Dipped headlights should be used even during daylight hours when visibility deteriorates, as heavy rain drastically impairs a driver's ability to see and react to hazards.
The RAC's most critical warning concerns floodwater. Motorists must never attempt to drive through water if they cannot gauge its depth or if it appears to be moving. Even shallow flowing water can cause vehicles to lose control, and the safest action is always to turn around and find an alternative route, regardless of journey delays.
Regular tyre and wiper blade checks are essential, the organisation emphasises. Tyres with adequate tread depth disperse water and maintain grip on wet surfaces, whilst effective wipers ensure clear visibility. Hydroplaning—where tyres lose contact with the road due to water—poses significant risk. Drivers experiencing this should ease off the accelerator, avoid harsh braking, and steer gently into the skid direction until grip returns.
Before setting off, motorists should check Met Office weather forecasts and local authority websites for road closures and flood-prone areas. Planning extra journey time and preparing for diversions reduces stress and improves safety for all road users during these challenging conditions.
