Drivers face a tenfold increase in braking distances as the RAC issues urgent winter driving guidance amid plummeting temperatures and widespread frost across the UK.
The motoring organisation's comprehensive advice comes as yellow weather warnings for ice remain in force across various regions, with treacherous conditions expected to persist on Britain's roads.
Key recommendations include thorough vehicle checks before departure. Drivers must ensure tyres have adequate tread depth and correct inflation, verify all lights work properly, and top up screenwash with winter additive to prevent freezing. The RAC also urges motorists to carry emergency kits containing a charged mobile phone, warm clothing, blankets and a shovel.
On icy roads, driving style must adapt dramatically. The RAC stresses motorists should reduce speed significantly, use higher gears for better traction, and avoid sudden steering, braking or acceleration. Gentle inputs prevent skidding, whilst maintaining much greater stopping distances becomes paramount.
Journey preparation remains crucial. Windscreens and mirrors must be completely clear of ice and snow before driving, using de-icer and scrapers rather than hot water which can crack glass. The RAC warns against leaving vehicles unattended with engines running to defrost, as this invites theft.
Local authorities continue gritting primary routes, but secondary roads and untreated surfaces remain extremely hazardous. The guidance particularly affects commuters and those making essential journeys during early morning or late evening hours when temperatures drop lowest.
Failure to follow this advice risks serious accidents, personal injury and significant travel disruption, whilst the RAC's proactive approach aims to reduce strain on emergency services during the winter period.
