A shocking 70% of UK police forces have caught motorists speeding at double the 30mph limit in 2023, with some drivers hitting speeds of 107mph on residential streets. The RAC Foundation's analysis of data from 37 of England and Wales' 44 police forces paints a disturbing picture of widespread excessive speeding.
The study reveals that speeding remains a major contributor to road collisions, causing serious injuries and fatalities. Exceeding the speed limit increases the risk of an accident and its severity – a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring road safety.
While speed cameras and police patrols are in place, the prevalence of drivers exceeding limits by such large margins suggests current strategies may not be effective deterrents for all motorists. Local authorities and police forces are exploring new technologies and approaches to tackle speeding, including community speed watch schemes and targeted enforcement operations.
Road safety charities have long advocated for stricter penalties and increased public education on the dangers of speeding – a call reinforced by the RAC Foundation's data. A concerted effort from drivers, police, and policymakers is needed to foster a culture of responsible driving and make our roads safer for everyone.
