The motoring organisation highlighted that preventative maintenance is crucial for avoiding common breakdowns often exacerbated by colder, wetter conditions and reduced daylight hours.
Key recommendations from the RAC include inspecting tyre pressure and tread depth, checking battery health, and ensuring all fluid levels – such as engine oil, coolant, and screenwash – are topped up. Drivers are also advised to test all lights, including headlights, tail lights, and indicators, to ensure they are fully functional and clean, improving visibility during darker mornings and evenings.
Historically, breakdown services experience a surge in call-outs during the autumn and winter periods. Issues such as flat batteries, tyre problems, and engine faults become more prevalent as temperatures drop and road conditions deteriorate. The RAC's advice aims to equip drivers with the knowledge to identify and rectify potential problems before they lead to a roadside emergency, which can cause significant inconvenience and delays.
The organisation emphasised that a simple pre-autumn check could save drivers time, money, and stress. Many of the recommended checks can be performed at home with minimal tools, or easily carried out by a professional mechanic for those less confident in their DIY skills.
