Drivers who fail to fully clear ice from their windscreens this winter face fines of up to £1,000, the RAC has warned, as temperatures plummet across Britain.
The motoring organisation says police can initially issue fixed penalty notices of £60 and three penalty points for obstructed windscreens. But cases reaching court could see fines rise to £1,000, hitting hard-pressed motorists already struggling with the cost of living.
The penalties stem from Regulation 30 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, which requires drivers to maintain a full view of the road ahead. The Highway Code reinforces this, stating all windows must be clear of obstruction and all lights visible.
This means drivers must clear not just windscreens, but side windows, rear windows and vehicle lights of ice, snow or dirt before setting off. Many motorists rushing to work on frosty mornings fail to clear more than a small patch of their windscreen - a costly mistake.
Beyond the financial hit, obstructed vision dramatically increases accident risk, endangering families and other road users. The RAC urges drivers to allow extra time for proper de-icing, using scrapers and de-icer sprays rather than dangerous shortcuts like pouring hot water on glass, which can cause cracking.
The warning comes as winter conditions grip much of the UK, with forecasters predicting more frost and ice in coming weeks. Motoring experts say preparation is key - checking tyre pressures, fluid levels and ensuring ice scrapers are readily available.
