As winter approaches and temperatures drop across the UK, the RAC has issued a crucial warning to motorists about the dangers and penalties associated with driving with an uncleared windscreen. The motoring organisation is urging drivers to dedicate sufficient time to completely clear all ice and frost from their vehicle's windows, not just a small section, to ensure full visibility and avoid severe legal repercussions.
Drivers who fail to properly clear their windscreens could face a hefty fine of up to £1,000 and receive three penalty points on their licence. This warning comes as many drivers are often tempted to clear only a small 'porthole' in the ice, a practice that is not only dangerous but also illegal. Rule 229 of The Highway Code explicitly states that drivers must be able to see clearly out of every window before setting off.
Beyond the immediate legal penalties, driving with obstructed vision can have more serious consequences. In the event of an accident, an insurance company could refuse to pay out if it determines that poor visibility, caused by an uncleared windscreen, contributed to the incident. This could leave drivers significantly out of pocket for damages and injuries.
The RAC advises using a de-icer spray and a scraper, along with the car's heating and ventilation system, to efficiently clear windscreens. It also recommends ensuring all lights are clean and working, and checking tyre pressures and tread depth, as these are also vital for safe winter driving conditions. Pre-planning journeys and allowing extra time for de-icing is crucial during colder months.
This annual reminder from the RAC serves to highlight the importance of road safety during the challenging winter period. With adverse weather conditions, including ice, snow, and fog, increasing the risks on the roads, ensuring full visibility is a fundamental responsibility for all drivers to protect themselves and other road users.
