Adam Ramsay-Peaty, 31, finished fifth in the 100m breaststroke final at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. This marks the first time he has been beaten at the event, having previously secured 16 European Championships gold medals.
Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi won the race in 58.58 seconds. Ramsay-Peaty's time of 59.10 was 0.55 seconds faster than his performance at last month's Commonwealth Games, where he won two bronze medals.
Elsewhere at the championships, Great Britain's Katie Shanahan, 22, secured a gold medal in the 200m backstroke. Angharad Evans, 23, also set a new championship record in the women's 100m breaststroke semi-final with a time of 1:04.97.
