Rare Led Zeppelin single, ordered to be destroyed, found on Antiques Roadshow

A rare seven-inch single of Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love', which the band's manager ordered to be recalled and destroyed, has been discovered on Antiques Roadshow.

  • The single was a rare pressing of 500 copies made by Atlantic Records.
  • Led Zeppelin had a strict no-single rule, preferring to release music as full albums.
  • An expert estimated the vinyl could fetch around £1,000 at auction.

A rare Led Zeppelin record, which the band had ordered to be recalled and destroyed, has been unearthed on Antiques Roadshow. The discovery was made during a recent episode filmed at Caerphilly Castle in Wales.

The seven-inch single features the classic track 'Whole Lotta Love'. Atlantic Records produced a rare pressing of 500 copies, despite Led Zeppelin's policy of only releasing full albums. Consequently, their manager, Peter Grant, instructed that all copies of the single be recalled and destroyed.

The owner, who has had the vinyl since the early '70s, told antiques expert Marc Allum that he acquired it while looking for records for a disco. Allum noted that the vinyl was only released in the US and "shouldn't really exist" in the UK. He estimated the record could fetch around £1,000 at auction, despite some finger marks and light scratches.

The owner also shared that the record was not popular at his disco, reportedly clearing the dance floor. He plans to give it to his daughters, stating he will not play it again to avoid devaluing it.
