Red Roses face revitalised Black Ferns after drawing with Canada

England's women's rugby team, the Red Roses, will play New Zealand's Black Ferns this Saturday, following a draw against Canada which ended their winning streak.

  • England's 40-game unbeaten streak was blemished by a draw against Canada last Saturday.
  • The Red Roses will face the Black Ferns this Saturday, the team that defeated them in the World Cup final four years ago.
  • Defence specialist Shaun Edwards has joined England as a coaching consultant this week.

England's women's rugby team, the Red Roses, are set to face the Black Ferns this Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Allianz Stadium. This follows a draw against Canada last Saturday, which marked the first time since 2022 that England did not win a game, though their 40-game unbeaten streak remains intact.

The Black Ferns, who last defeated England in the World Cup final four years ago, are described as revitalised under new head coach Whitney Hansen, who has been undefeated since taking over in December of last year. England has won the three Tests played against New Zealand in the past three years, but the nations have not competed against each other in two years.

Defence specialist Shaun Edwards has joined the England camp as a coaching consultant this week. England back-row Abi Burton noted that the team learns more from losses and draws, and that Edwards has brought a new energy to the squad.

New Zealand lock Maiakawanakaulani Roos stated that downing the Red Roses is their target. Several Black Ferns players, including Roos and captain Georgia Ponsonby, competed in England's PWR last season, which Roos believes has aided their preparation.
