The UK government has temporarily blocked the permanent export of Rembrandt's 'Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet', a painting valued at £71 million. The decision provides an opportunity for a UK gallery or institution to acquire the masterpiece and keep it in the country.
Painted in 1657, the portrait has been part of the UK's cultural landscape since the mid-18th century. Arts Minister Ruth Mackenzie stated that the painting's scale, beauty, and history make it a priority for cultural partners and funders to help it remain in the UK.
The export licence application for the painting will be deferred until 26 December 2026. During this initial period, expressions of interest from appropriate purchasers are welcomed to acquire the object at a recommended price of £71,696,324.90, plus VAT.
