Renters are encountering greater challenges than homeowners in charging electric vehicles at home, according to new research from temporary car insurance provider Tempcover. The data reveals that homeowners are significantly more likely to have access to home charging facilities.
The research indicates that 90% of homeowners have home charging access, while only 69% of renters do. Key barriers for tenants include installation costs, cited by 36% of renters, and landlord restrictions, affecting 27%.
Other concerns for renters include higher electricity bills (19%) and the need to secure multiple permissions (18%). Renters are also twice as likely as homeowners to rely on public charging stations daily, with 18% of renters doing so compared to 9% of homeowners.
Despite these difficulties, 70% of tenants express confidence in the UK's future electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Renters and landlords can claim up to half the cost of installing a charger, up to £500, with the scheme extended until March 2027. The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) has welcomed these plans.
