The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has today, 25 September 2026, published its accident investigation report into the foundering of the St Helena-registered fishing vessel Argos Georgia. The incident, which occurred on 22 July 2024 approximately 190 nautical miles east of Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, resulted in the loss of 13 lives.
Rob Loder, Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents, stated that the accident was tragic. He emphasised the importance of strict adherence to maintaining a vessel’s watertight integrity when fishing in remote and hostile ocean areas. Mr Loder also highlighted the necessity of a quick, clear, and efficient emergency plan, along with training and safety drills, to improve survival chances in extreme circumstances.
The investigation was conducted by the MAIB on behalf of the St Helena Government, in accordance with the Category 2 Red Ensign Group Memorandum of Understanding.
