Republican Congresswoman Criticises Trump's Immigration Enforcement

Florida Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar has released a campaign ad criticising President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement efforts, stating some have "gone too far."

  • María Elvira Salazar's ad states that 50% of 50,000 people detained in July had no criminal record.
  • Salazar represents a Miami-area district where Trump won by 15 percentage points in 2024.
  • The congresswoman is a proponent of the Dignity Act, an immigration reform proposal.

Florida Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar has released a campaign advertisement criticising President Donald Trump's approach to immigration enforcement. In the 30-second ad, Salazar states, "Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far."

Salazar highlighted that in July, 50% of the 50,000 people detained had no criminal record. She also cautioned, "Be careful what your advisers are telling you about immigration policy."

Salazar, who was first elected in 2020, represents a competitive Miami-area district that is nearly three-quarters Hispanic. She is a supporter of the Dignity Act, a proposal in the House of Representatives aimed at creating a pathway to legal status for some undocumented immigrants.

The ad comes ahead of the 3 November midterm elections, where Democrats are seeking to gain control of both the House and Senate. This move by Salazar is described as the latest instance of Republican lawmakers distancing themselves from Trump.

Why this matters: This action by a Republican congresswoman suggests a potential shift in strategy among some Republican lawmakers regarding immigration policy ahead of the November midterm elections.
