Some residents in an east London tower block have stated they did not hear any alarms during a fire on Saturday in which a man died on the 17th floor. They told BBC London they were alerted by neighbours banging on their doors and telling them to leave the building.
The man died in a flat fire at Neutron Tower in Poplar. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said two adults and a child were rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.
Katarzyna, a fifth-floor resident, said she heard shouting from outside and neighbours from the 19th floor shouting 'fire, fire, out'. She added that the smoke and heat alarms in her flat did not activate and the staircase was pitch black with no emergency lighting.
Priya Armstrong-Pond, who lives on the seventh floor, said her next-door neighbour alerted her around 04:30 on Saturday. She also stated there were no fire alarms going off and no lighting in the landing or stairs when they evacuated.
FirstPort, the building's management company, said it was "deeply saddened" by the man's death and that its immediate priority is resident safety. The LFB stated its Fire Investigation Team is investigating a range of factors regarding the cause of the fire.
