A retired Nigerian army general, Maj Gen Rabe Abubakar, has died while being held captive by kidnappers in the north-west of the country. The military confirmed his death, which highlights the ongoing security challenges facing parts of Nigeria.
Abubakar was kidnapped on 30 May after armed men attacked his vehicle while he was attending a wedding in the Katsina region. His wife and driver were also taken, and a video emerged days before his death showing him in captivity with an apparent injury to his left leg.
The military initially chose not to comment on the abduction while efforts were being made to free those in captivity. However, a statement was released paying tribute to Abubakar, who was 61 years old, and offering condolences to his family and former colleagues.
The military described Abubakar's contributions to counter-insurgency operations as 'immense', and said his commitment to duty and the unity of Nigeria was a shining example for all personnel. The security agency has pledged to intensify operations to bring those responsible for his death to justice and dismantle terrorist networks.
The kidnapping and death of Abubakar highlight the ongoing security challenges facing parts of north-west Nigeria, where criminal gangs and militant jihadists operate. The region has been affected by frequent kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and attacks on rural communities.
