A review paper published in Cell Press Blue explores the connection between protein intake, ageing, and longevity across humans, rodents, and insects. The paper, titled 'The hallmarks of protein and amino acid restriction in aging and longevity', was published on Friday 31 July 2026.
Professor Paul Greenhaff, Professor of Muscle Metabolism at the University of Nottingham, noted that the article is a review, not original research. He highlighted that it primarily relies on evidence from rodent and insect studies, and the question of whether protein restriction benefits healthy ageing and longevity in humans has not been addressed in human volunteer studies.
Professor Greenhaff stated that rodents and insects are not representative models of human ageing due to differences in body composition change over lifespan, higher metabolic rates, and poorer metabolic stability. He concluded that while the associations identified are thought-provoking and offer mechanistic insight, their translation to humans is debatable.
Professor Kevin McConway, Emeritus Professor of Applied Statistics at the Open University, clarified that the paper is a narrative review of the literature, not a systematic review. He also pointed out that while the paper draws conclusions about human health, much of the reviewed research involved experimental animals, raising questions about the applicability of these findings to humans.
