The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is anticipating a £10m loss for the financial year ending June 2026, a figure influenced by England's 'hugely disappointing' Six Nations campaign. Under Steve Borthwick, England finished fifth in the table, losing four of their five matches, which resulted in reduced prize money.
RFU insiders have indicated that a 'light calendar' of men's matches, which typically account for around 85% of the union's revenues, is a more significant factor in the expected £10m net loss than the Six Nations performance itself. This follows an underlying profit of £8m and a total loss of £2m in the previous year.
In response, the RFU submitted a planning application to Richmond council in June to allow for more concerts at Twickenham. The union aims to increase the number of non-sporting stadium events to eight by 2029, held over a maximum of 15 days, up from the current allowance of three. A decision from Richmond council on these plans, which could cost up to £2m, is expected in October.
