Richard Hughes has been appointed sporting director at Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, only days after his departure from Liverpool. Al-Hilal confirmed the finalisation of his contract, stating that Hughes arrived on Sunday and has already assumed his responsibilities.
The club explained that the move aims to "contribute to raising the quality of technical work, developing recruitment and scouting processes, and enhancing integration across all aspects related to the football sector." Hughes joined Liverpool from Bournemouth in 2024.
During his time at Liverpool, Hughes oversaw the appointment of head coach Arne Slot after Jurgen Klopp stepped down. Liverpool won the Premier League title in the season following his arrival but finished fifth last term, leading to Slot's replacement by Andoni Iraola. Liverpool stated on Saturday that Hughes wished to "seek a fresh challenge."
Al-Hilal, Saudi Arabia’s most successful team, recently signed Brazil forward Gabriel Martinelli from Arsenal and England striker Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa. They are currently top of the Saudi Pro League, having won all five of their matches this season.
