Meals on Wheels Jersey, a service providing hot meals to islanders unable to prepare them, is experiencing difficulties in attracting new volunteers. Maureen Bougeard, secretary for the organisation, stated that prospective volunteers often do not respond after learning they must cover their own fuel expenses.
The service currently delivers meals to around 100 individuals four days a week. Bougeard noted that many volunteers are retired, with some driving the length of the island twice daily.
Meals on Wheels Jersey received £38,000 from the Jersey Community Foundation for 2026 and 2027. This grant covers the charge to the government of Jersey's health and community services, which supply and facilitate meal preparation. The organisation hopes to renegotiate its service level agreement with the government to ensure continued operation.
