Among the chemicals identified, Greenpeace claims that seven are currently banned for use within the European Union due to health or environmental concerns. While the report does not state that all 102 pesticides would be present on a single plate, it highlights the potential for multiple residues to be present across the various ingredients that make up a meal. This raises questions about the cumulative effect of consuming numerous pesticide residues, an area of ongoing scientific debate.
The findings come amidst broader discussions about food standards and agricultural practices in the United Kingdom. Post-Brexit, the UK has maintained its own regulatory framework for pesticide approval, which largely mirrored EU regulations at the point of departure. Greenpeace is urging the Government to take stronger action to reduce pesticide use across the agricultural sector. They argue that current policies are insufficient to protect both biodiversity and public health from the long-term impacts of chemical farming. The organisation advocates for a transition towards agroecological farming, which minimises the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers.
