Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue shared all 10 wickets as England, under returning captain Joe Root, delivered a commanding performance on the first day of the Test match at Headingley. Root, back at the helm following Ben Stokes' retirement and Brendon McCullum's departure, won the toss and chose to bowl under overcast skies.
Robinson initiated the demolition by taking a wicket with the first delivery of the match, finishing with figures of five for 51. Tongue swept through Pakistan's lower order, claiming five for 46. The visitors were dismissed for 171 inside 48.1 overs.
England began their reply strongly, reaching 112 for two by the close of play. Root, unbeaten on 37, and Jordan Cox, 23 not out, formed an unbroken half-century partnership, reducing the overnight deficit to 59 runs.
Robinson, 32, made a significant statement in his return to the international side, having been brought back from a two-and-a-half-year exile earlier in the summer. He took a career-best seven-wicket haul against New Zealand before missing two subsequent matches.
