Robotics Startup Generalist Reaches $3 Billion Valuation

Robotics startup Generalist has reportedly achieved a $3 billion valuation after securing nearly $200 million in additional capital.

  • Generalist's valuation has reached $3 billion following new funding led by 8VC.
  • The additional capital, nearly $200 million, is an extension of a $400 million Series B round, bringing the total to $600 million.
  • Generalist was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, and former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry.

Robotics startup Generalist is now valued at $3 billion after reportedly raising nearly $200 million in additional capital. This funding, led by 8VC, is an extension of a $400 million Series B round announced in June, bringing the total for that round to $600 million.

Generalist, founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, along with former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry, is developing an AI foundation model for various robots. The company claims its Gen 1.5 model allows robots to learn new tasks from video demonstrations as short as 3 to 12 seconds.

The startup is currently collaborating with a limited number of customers to refine its model for specific applications. Generalist operates in a competitive field, with other companies like Physical Intelligence, reportedly valued at $11 billion, and SoftBank-backed Skild AI, valued at $14 billion, also pursuing similar broad-range robot AI solutions.

Why this matters: The surge in funding for robotics startups like Generalist reflects investor belief that robotics may soon experience a "ChatGPT moment," where robots can perform general tasks without explicit individual training.
