Roku has introduced a new feature called Roku Labs, which allows customers in the US to access experimental apps developed by the company. These apps, which are still in development, will be accessible via a new tile on the Roku Home Screen.
Initially, users will find apps for tracking weather and stocks, as well as a new game named Roku Dash. This game involves players flying a UFO across "Roku City," the company's default screensaver.
In addition to Roku Labs, the company is expanding its personalized Home Screen feature to new markets, including Mexico and Brazil. These markets will receive region-specific features, such as localized content and tailored suggestions. Roku's Voice assistant will also gain the ability to answer weather-related questions.
On the streaming front, Roku plans to offer bundled subscriptions in the US and Mexico. These bundles will allow users to combine streaming plans from smaller services like AMC+, Fox ONE, Hallmark+, Howdy, and Starz, often at a more affordable rate than purchasing individual plans.
Roku has also open-sourced the software for its remote, Roku LT OS, which could encourage external developers to create their own applications and devices.
