Romell Glave, the 26-year-old sprinter born in Jamaica who moved to Croydon as a teenager, clinched the 100m final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. He celebrated his victory by wearing a gold costume crown and declaring, "now is my time to dominate."
Glave, who spent "the whole of 2022" in a brace after fracturing his back twice in six years, completed the race in 10.09 seconds. His win, following Amy Hunt's success in the women's 100m, secured a British one-two with Welshman Jeremiah Azu taking silver.
Glave, a bronze medallist at the 2024 European championships, stated his main objective for the season was to be "the king of Europe." He added, "I'm a different athlete now, my mindset is to that elite level."
In other news from the championships, local favourite Matthew Hudson-Smith advanced to Wednesday night's 400m final. He finished second in his semi-final, with concerns about a potential injury after appearing to grimace near the finish, though he later confirmed he had "misjudged" the race.
