The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is currently touring a revival of Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female production of Julius Caesar to secondary schools. The production, which originally ran at the Donmar Warehouse in 2012, recently played at Ormiston Bushfield Academy in Peterborough.
The play is framed within an incarceration story, with the auditorium stripped bare and actors dressed in grey, state-issue outfits. Harriet Walter reprises her role as Brutus, while Jackie Clune returns as Julius Caesar. Leah Harvey, who was the soothsayer in the 2016 revival, now plays Mark Anthony.
The production incorporates modern elements, including small TV screens showing CCTV footage and scene summaries, and electronic music. Executions are depicted with hoods and plastic guns, accompanied by the sound of real shots.
