A new staging of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' at the New Vic in Newcastle-under-Lyme features Natalie Casey as Juliet, who is celebrating her 40th birthday in the play. Comedian-turned-actor Russell Kane takes on the role of Romeo, presented as a similarly seasoned character.
This collaboration between the New Vic and Not Too Tame portrays the lovers' relationship as an enthusiastic fling rather than a rebellious first romance. Juliet is depicted as an assertive woman, certain in her desires, while Romeo, dressed as a scaffolder, shows impressive command of the language.
The production, directed by Jimmy Fairhurst, includes updated gags and audience interaction. It is running at the New Vic, Newcastle-under-Lyme, until 10 October.
