George Russell has clinched pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, delivering an immense lap on the Baku street circuit. His Mercedes teammate, championship leader Kimi Antonelli, experienced an uncharacteristic error, hitting a wall in the first qualifying session and being eliminated.
Antonelli, who leads Russell by 81 points in the world championship, was left disconsolate after clipping a barrier at turn one just 11 minutes into Friday's running. The incident caused damage and a puncture, leading to his retirement from qualifying in 16th place.
Russell's pole position, his fifth of the season and first in Baku, puts him in a strong position to challenge for points in Saturday's race. He finished 0.837 seconds clear of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, marking the largest pole margin of the season.
Despite the setback, Antonelli, who has eight victories in his second F1 season, aims to recover in the race. Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord suggested Antonelli has the pace to climb back up the field, noting the overtaking opportunities on the Baku circuit.
