A wave of overnight Russian missile strikes has resulted in the deaths of at least eight people in the capital Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian authorities have stated. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) reported that apartment blocks and warehouses were targeted in the "massive attack" on Thursday, with at least 33 people also injured.
Rescue crews are working to free individuals trapped under the rubble of demolished buildings, having already pulled two survivors from debris. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a children's hospital sustained damage, with broken windows and nearby cars set ablaze. An industrial centre in the Solomyanskyi district of south-west Kyiv was also hit by missiles.
Separately, Romania's defence ministry reported that a drone entered its national airspace, approximately 13 kilometres east of Galați, triggering an air alert siren. The drone crashed into an uninhabited area, causing a small fire which was extinguished, with no casualties or material damage reported. The Polish military also initiated "defensive air operations" to protect its airspace, as it shares a south-eastern border with Ukraine.
