At least 600,000 people across Ukraine are without electricity following deadly overnight Russian missile and drone strikes, President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced. He stated that "critical" energy infrastructure was targeted in Kyiv and its surrounding region, as well as in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv.
Ukraine's state emergencies service, DSNS, reported that at least three people were killed and 21 injured in Kyiv. Russia's defence ministry confirmed its "massive" overnight strikes, stating they targeted communications and energy facilities in the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions used by Ukraine's military.
These strikes occurred despite a claim by US President Donald Trump on Sunday that an "energy ceasefire" was in effect between Russia and Ukraine. President Zelensky has repeatedly indicated Ukraine is prepared to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow reciprocates. However, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated Ukraine does not merit the "respite" a ceasefire would provide, suggesting it would allow Europe to supply Ukraine with new weapons.
