A man has been charged with crimes linked to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, marking the first such case brought in the UK. Dr Vincent Brown, 65, formerly known as Dr Vincent Bajinya, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Dr Brown, who lives in Islington, north London, faces seven offences. These include one charge of conduct ancillary to genocide and six charges of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS special crime and counter-terrorism division, stated that the charges relate to allegations that Dr Brown participated in the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994. He is alleged to have directed and incited acts of murder and genocide carried out by others.
The charges follow an investigation by the Metropolitan Police war crimes team, which began in September 2019 after a request from the Rwandan government. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counter-terrorism policing London, said the case demonstrates the UK is not a safe haven for individuals suspected of committing international crimes.
