Women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka experienced a surprise defeat in the Canadian Open, just weeks before her US Open title defence. Sabalenka was beaten 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-4 by Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova in Toronto, with the match lasting almost two and a half hours. Sabalenka, who recovered from a set down, ultimately double-faulted when serving to stay in the match, handing the victory to the number 16 seed.
This latest defeat follows a challenging summer for Sabalenka, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the French Open and the last 16 of Wimbledon. Alexandrova expressed her happiness with the win, stating she tried to play every point as if it were the last.
In the men's event in Montreal, British number two Cameron Norrie also bowed out, losing 6-2 7-6 (10-8) to 18th seed Arthur Fils. Norrie had two set-point opportunities and saved three match points in the second set to force a tie-break, but Fils ultimately secured the win in one hour and 43 minutes.
Elsewhere in the women's draw, third seed Jessica Pegula suffered her first career loss to Diana Shnaider, who won 6-3 6-3. Shnaider will now face Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, after Swiatek overcame Marta Kostyuk 3-6 6-1 6-2.
