Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka has successfully navigated her first-round match at the US Open, defeating Camila Osorio 6-2 6-4. This victory marks the beginning of her ambitious bid for a historic 'three-peat' at Flushing Meadows.
Sabalenka, who has faced a dip in form following a strong start to the season, expressed her enthusiasm for returning to Arthur Ashe Stadium. "I really feel my best emotions at this stadium so it means a lot to be back and have an opportunity for a 'three-peat'," she stated, adding, "I'm ready for the fight."
Despite a dominant first set against the 52nd-ranked Osorio, Sabalenka encountered challenges in the second, hitting 12 unforced errors and landing 48% of her first serves. However, the four-time major singles champion fended off three break points and secured the win after one hour and 28 minutes.
Her position as world number one is currently under serious threat. Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina trails her by just 434 points, while home favourites Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff also have a chance to claim the top spot with a title triumph. Sabalenka will need to win the title and hope Rybakina does not reach the semi-finals to extend her 99-week reign.
Sabalenka is set to face Russian qualifier Polina Iatcenko in her next match.
