Reigning women's singles champion Aryna Sabalenka has successfully launched her US Open title defence, securing a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Camila Osorio. Sabalenka expressed her focus on the present, stating she is determined to "not looking back no matter what, if it's good or bad."
Despite a professional opening performance, Sabalenka's No 1 ranking is at risk after a four-month period without reaching a final. Elena Rybakina reportedly has a strong chance to claim the top spot.
In the men's draw, the Cincinnati Open champion and 10th seed, Arthur Fils, faced an early exit. He was defeated by former world No 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas in a four-set battle, with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1, 6-4. Tsitsipas, who had fallen to No 88 in the ATP rankings this year, described this win as a significant step forward.
