Britain's Harriet Dart has powered through to the second round of the US Open, overcoming home favourite Peyton Stearns in a three-set battle. The 30-year-old, who also had to qualify for the main draw, won 3-6 6-3 6-2 in a match lasting two hours and 24 minutes. Dart received treatment for a foot problem after the second set and needed four match points to seal her victory.
Dart celebrated her win with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, who is part of her coaching team. Bartoli, who won at SW19 in 2013, has been working with Dart on an ad-hoc basis since January, focusing primarily on Grand Slams and training weeks.
In the men's draw, Jacob Fearnley, playing as a lucky loser, also advanced after a marathon five-set match against Spain's Martin Landaluce. Fearnley secured a 4-6 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory in four hours and 10 minutes, making it the longest match of his career. Despite a memorable air shot on match point in the final set, he held his nerve to serve out the win.
British number one Katie Boulter will face seventh seed Karolina Muchova in her next match, following Muchova's dominant 6-3 6-0 win over Sinja Kraus.
